The archive documents originated from the California Institute of the Arts Feminist Art collection and document early feminist art groups manifestos, lectures, and personal ephemera. As the documents dissolved, fragments of text were gradually revealed until the erased versions of the documents were fully legible. The intention being to re-imagine the documents to exist within their own temporality, away from dominant narratives and homogenous feminist practices that female artists are still subjected to. The process is a physical gesture against patriarchal systems by removing, exposing, and critiquing language that enforces the notion of ‘one history’. Artist statement
My practice is inspired by the intersections between feminism, archives, and semiotics, which I translate into visual art through auto-destructive installations, printmaking, and books. Works are often contextualised against archives, oral histories, and statements I’ve collected on the experience of objectification. The intention being, to tackle the constant question of how to work with and against existing systems that determine our portrayal and perception without reinforcing the patriarchy.
